Pre-Purchase Inspection Guidelines

There are variations in the regulatory requirements across different provinces of Canada, so it is best to check which conditions apply to your province specifically. But some basics are applied all across the country.

Suppose you are getting a brand new or second-hand car in Ontario, Newfoundland, Labrador and Manitoba. In that case, the vehicle’s registration can only take place once you have conducted a safety check.

This step is taken care of all over Canada by the car dealership you are purchasing your car from. This has been enforced by law, so it saves you the trouble. This same law does not apply to second-hand car dealerships, so getting the safety check done would be best.

Some provinces of the country, like Prince Edward Island or New Brunswick, have a law that tells vehicle owners to get their cars inspected every year. In Nova Scotia, the car inspection needs to be done every second year. There are such discrepancies from province to province, so best to do your location-based research. No matter where you are from, professionals from InstaMek will give you the most updated requirements and carry out those inspections for you so that you are in the clear.

When and why should I get my vehicle inspected?

Before buying or selling your vehicle, it is best to get inspected once. After the initial inspection, make sure that you do regular periodic inspections so that your vehicle is in the best shape possible.

Pre-purchase inspections are essential to abide by the law and make sure that you and your vehicle are safe and healthy. Who knows, during a periodic inspection, you might just find a fluid leak that would cost you a lot of money if gone unnoticed.

What parts of the vehicle are inspected?

  • The car braking system
  • Heat and air conditioning system
  • Fixing the steering wheel
  • Fixing the suspension system
  • Exhaust
  • Tires
  • Checking the fluid levels
  • Repairing all  belts and hoses

Tips for buying a used car
  • Do your research!

Ali with InstaMek was incredible! It was such a rainy and cold day, but he did not complain. Ali switched the tires from summer to winters very quickly and provided his professional opinion on the quality of the winters. A great service for a quick fix! 🙂

The “G” in “Grant Feth” stands for goated. The extra hundred or so dollars beats any Facebook marketplace mobile mechanic.

I first hired Instamek for a pre purchase inspection. Jeff was great- he gave me a good overview of the car and helped prioritize what repairs it would need. I bought the car and had Jeff back a couple weeks later to do the urgent repairs (alternator replacement and brakes). He did the repairs efficiently, right outside my home. I was concerned that the suspension was clunky so he test drove the car and reassured me the suspension and steering was good and typical of this make and model. I really appreciate his honesty- he could have sold me unnecessary repairs- instead he listened to me and gave me reassurance. I feel like my car is in excellent hands with Jeff and I really appreciate the convenience of the service model and follow up from the office after the appointments. They have earned my business!

We just had an excellent experience with Instamek! Andrew hooked us up with a pre purchase inspection at the owners house, the day before we came into the city to see the truck. Shortly after his inspection we received an excellent report, with photos, checklists and comments. We called and they spoke with us about it. Next day we bought the truck with confidence. Thank you!

Explained in detail why the car I was going to buy would not last. Make sure you call both the mechanic and the dealership or seller before the appointment to confirm the seller can accommodate the inspection.
